Inclosed I send you a list of the officers, recently confined at Savannah but who have been removed to Charleston - about 600 in all. The following were in hospital at Savannah, Sept. 1 and were all comfortable. I visited them at that time, and having been removed the following Saturday to Charleston, I am unable to tell how they are at this date. None, I think, have died since.
Capt. J. Kauff, 143rd Penna. Vol. Capt. Wm A. Sands, 1st Penna. Cavalry Capt. G. H. Sawls, 1st Vermont Artillery Capt. John Smylar, 14th N. Y. Artillery Capt. Z. Vaughan, 45 N. Y. Vol Lieut. W. H. Bender, 123rd Ohio OVI Lieut. S. P. Hodges, 112th N. Y. Vol. Lieut. Jacob Serydecker, 45th N. Y. Vol.
THE FOLLOWING OFFICERS DIED AT SAVANNAH:
Lieut. Waters, 16th Conn. Vol.; August Lieut. Greenwood, 3rd Maryland; Sat., Aug. 27 Capt. William McGinnis, 75 Ind. Vol.; Sept. 1There are no officers in Savannah. All have been removed to Charlotte and are in the jail yards. Some 1,200 officers are in Charleston. The Privates have been mostly removed from Andersonville; 2,500 are at Savannah; some 6,000 at the Charleston race course, and large numbers have been sent to Florence, S. C. The mortality rate continues great. They are better treated than they were at Andersonville.
