Ohioans Buried at Rebel
Prison of Andersonville, GA Surnames Beginning M through Q Extracted by |
The following records are from A List of the Union Soldiers Buried at Andersonville by Dorence Atwater (New York, 1890). Mr. Atwater tells an interesting story of his capture in July 1863 and his subsequent imprisonment at Andersonville, where he was paroled and worked as a clerk in Surgeon J. W. White's office to keep a daily record of deaths of all Federal prisoners of war. Mr. Atwater made another copy of the death record and smuggled it out of Andersonville with the intention of having it published. He took the list to Washington, presented it to the Government on the promise that it would be copied and made available to interested families. The Government did not publish the lists as agreed and Mr. Atwater was arrested and court-martialed and sentenced to prison at Auburn, New York. He spent two months of his 18-month sentence before receiving a presidential pardon. Upon his release, he privately published the lists, a portion of which is copied below. The lists are arranged by states in rough alphabetical order, giving grave number, soldier's name, regiment and company, date and cause of death. It should be noted that in many cases the year of death is not given in this list and the time period covered is not fully explained in the introduction. It may be assumed that the majority of deaths occurred in 1864 and 1865 the time period when Mr. Atwater was imprisoned.
Further information may be obtained in most cases from the "Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866" which is in 12 volumes.

Notes from Shirley Houk (submitter): Although the extractor, Carol Willsey Bell, recorded most of the names by grave number within the letter of the alphabet, I have chosen to alphabetize for this posting. The advantage of being recorded per numerical grave number as it will on occasion help to determine the year of death. It appears most of the 1865 deaths were recorded with the year; thus, if you find review grave numbers along with an 1865 record you may be able to determine year of death for a particular person. Per a history of Andersonville, POWs began arriving at the Camp in late Feb 1864. A definition of some of the more obsolete diseases is below. I have roster copies of the 13th and 33rd Regiments; thus, I have added information on men from those regiments to this document. My personal thanks to Carol Bell for extracting and sharing this listing.
