HILL, Samuel 18 Jan 1818 Deerfield Twp, Ross County OH John Benjamin HILL Kitturiah VOADLY Gravestone, Hebron AME Cemetery, Grange Hall On 16 Jan 1843, Samuel HILL married Alice Ann PORTER at the Hebron A. M. E. Church, in ceremony performed by the Rev. Phillip Nation. Samuel held the post of first postmaster of Grange Hall and Five Points. He died on 4 Apr 1897 after a "lingering illness," and was interred at the Hebron AME Cemetery at Grange Hall. Sam HILL was most noted as an outspoken pro-Union activist, and wrote many scathing letters to the U.S. Government about anti-Union news media activities, mainly in Circleville, Chillicothe, and Cincinatti. It may have been Sam about whom the adage, "What the Sam Hill is going on?" was coined during the American Civil War.
