Obituary / Additional Information: RADCLIFF, Mrs. Goldie May, died Sunday at her home in Jackson township, of tuberculosis, in the 22nd year. she was born at Austin, Ross County, May 28, 1899 and was the daughter of William and Minnie Peck Roseboom. May 23, 191?she was united in marriage to Charles Henry Radcliff in this city just five days before he left for the World War. Besides her husband and parents, she leaves a 17 months old daughter; two sisters, Mrs. Albert MADER of Chillicothe, and Miss Helen Roseboom and three brothers Floyd, Estell, and Forest of this city. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the United Brethren church, conducted by Rev. A. B. Cox.

Obituary / Additional Information: George REED was born ca. 1780 in County Tyrone, Ireland. He died in 1842 in Madison Township, Pickaway County, Ohio. He is the son of Robert Reed, an early settler of Pickaway County, Ohio. He was a Farmer and Justice of the Peace in Pickaway County, Ohio. He is listed in the the 1810 census (Tax List) and also for 1830. He owned property (land) in Madison Township as well as Deer Creek Township. Margaret Hickey of Circleville, Ohio wrote the following in a letter: "George Reed, was an early settler in Madison Township. His sons, Jesse and John REED around 1810 owned stills in Madison Township. In his Will and Testament, on file in the Courthouse in Circleville, probated in 1842, names the following children: (1 Joshaway (Joshua) REED. 2)Robert REED. 3) George REED. 4) Jesse REED 5) John REED. 6) Andrew REED. 6) Victor REED. 7) Margaret REED. 8) Nancy REED. 9) Catherine REED (married Thomas Mamilton) died in Franklin Co., Ohio.

Obituary / Additional Information: Joseph O. B. RENICK, who was born in this county in 1810 died in Franklin county of Monday afternoon. He was the son of William RENICK, who moved from Virginia to the neighborhood of South Bloomfield in 1803. The deceased was engaged in business in Circleville many years ago and moved to Franklin county in 1855. His funeral occurred on Wednesday and was largely attended, Hon. Allen G. THURMAN paying a tribute to the deceased in a brief address.

Obituary / Additional Information: Nancy STEELEY RICE was born Nov.19,1825 and died Oct23,1899,age 73 years 11months and 4 days. Mrs.RICE was a daughter of John and Margaret EMERSON STEELEY, pioneers of Pickaway Co. and sister of Mrs. Margaret HAYS of Kingston, Benjamin STEELEY of Haysville, Mrs. Ellen HOLDERMAN of Gilman,Ill., Silas STEELEY of this county. Deceased was married to James RICE June 5, 1845. To this union were born nine children,two of whom, a son,Clarence,of Pickaway township and a daughter, Mrs. Maggie McCARTNEY of Cedar Hill, survive to mourn the loss of a true and noble mother. Mrs. RICE had been an invalid for several years and death was due to tuberculosis. Mrs. RICE was a member of Salem Church for many years and fully exemplified her faith in Christ in her daily life. The funeral was held at Salem Church conducted by her pastor,Rev. Sherwood, in a comforting and impressive manner. The singing was rendered by a quartet from Kingston M.E.Church which was lovely and was truly appreciated.

She was a former employee of Orient State Institution and a member of the Resurrection Independent Baptist Church of Circleville. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Defenbaugh-Wise Funeral Home. The Rev. Bruce Engelman will officiate. Burial will be at Forest Cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today, 2:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Hands for Disabled.

Born in Five Points, Aug 3, 1871, he was a son of Laban and Amanda TOY Rogers. In addition to his widow, he is survived by three children, John and George Rogers of Circleville, and Mrs. Leona KENDALL of Jackson Township, three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Private funeral services were at 2 p.m.. Friday in the Mader Chapel. The Rev. Clarence SWEARINGEN of Williamsport officiated. Burial was made in Forest Cemetery.

Obituary / Additional Information: CITY MARSHALL JOHN W. RODGERS, died at his home on Franklin street last Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the result of softening of the brain occasioned by a tumor. He was 31 years old. Mr. Rodgers has been quite poorly for the past 2 or 3 years, having suffered continually with his head ever since he was struck on the head with a large cane some four or five years ago. He has been confined to his bed almost continually since his election. A post mortem was held and the cause of death, which has been in doubt, thus revealed. He leaves a wife, and three children, two girls and one boy, to mourn his loss. The funeral occurred Monday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Joseph's church and was largely attended, the Circleville guards turning out in a body.

Obituary / Additional Information: John C. Russ, Se. a resident of Circleville for nearly forty years, died at his home, on South Court St, twenty minutes before 12 o'clock, Thursday night of last week, in his 84th year. He had been confined to his house for several years because of weakness of his limbs. On 21st ult, he was obliged to take to his bed, suffering with senile pneumonia, and it soon became evident that life's limit had been reached. Mr. Russ was born in Bishoffingen, Baden, Germany, on the 11th day of of January 1809. He learned the tailor's trade, but for twenty years or more he had been engaged in other pursuits. In 1837, he was united in marriage with Catharine Ernst. In 1839, they immigrated to American, and in 1853 came to Circleville, residing here ever since. Four children were born to them, a son, and daughter, Dr. J. C. Russ and Kate Russ, surviving with the aged mother to mourn. The deceased was baptized in infancy, and subsequently confirmed in the Lutheran Church. For several years he could not attend public services, but was still ready to help along the work of the church.

Obituary / Additional Information: Dr. J. C. Russ Dead, Had been an invalid for eight years--funeral Thursday from Lutheran Church Dr. J. C. Russ died at his home on south Court St. Monday evening at six thirty after an illness of 8 years. He was a man of remarkable vitality. In 1887 he suffered an attack of muscular rheumatism which developed into spinal trouble. The uraemic poison set in and for the past three weeks his digestive organs were paralyzed and he has not been able to partake of food or drink. He had become a mere shadow of his former self. All thru his illness his wife had been his devoted nurse, leaving his bedside only for a few moments, at a time, an ordeal that few women have to experience. Dr. Russ was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the funeral was held from the church this morning at 10 o'clock.


This is a continuation of his obit: SKETCH OF HIS LIFE. John Charles Russ was born in Chillicothe, December 22 1852. He was the son of John C. and Katherine Ernst Russ and with his parents came to this city in 1853. He had resided in the house where he died for the past 40 years. Dr. Russ attended the public school and also the Exlectic Medical college at Cincinnati, receiving his diploma in 1882. He began the practice of medicine in Ashville and remained there two years, when he returned to this city, opened an office here and practiced medicine up to the time of his illness. April 9 1896, he married Miss Christina daughter of Jacob and Mrs. Magdalina Mader. No children were born to this union. Besides his wife the doctor is survived by a nephew and niece, Chas. Schoeller and Mrs. Victoria Moss. He was the last of his family and name. His sister, Mrs. Kate Schoeller died March 4, 1904.

SHAFFER, Walnut St., died Sunday at 4:15 a.m. of pneumonia after a two weeks' illness. Mrs. SHAFFER was a native of Waverly, being born June 1, 1867, a daughter of Casper and Caroline YITTEREST MOLL, natives of Germany. She was married July 4, 1885 in Circleville to Mr. SHAFFER, who survives her, with the following children: Mrs. Clara FRILEY, Mrs. Edna BRUNGS, Mrs. Mary LOTT, this city; Mrs. Alice FLECK, Columbus; Mrs. Ella WOLFE, Ringgold; Albert of Benton Harbor, Mich.; Clarence of Yellowbud and Lawrence SHAFFER of Williamsport, in addition to a sister, Mrs. Mary HOUSE of Chillicothe. SHAFFER, 78, a native of Martins Ferry, but a resident of Circleville since 1904, died Monday at 4 p.m. at his home, 118 East Main Street, after illness of three days. He was born January 22, 1862, a son of John and Sarah OGAN SHAFFER. He married Rosa A. MOLL in Chillicothe, July 4, 1885, his wife and two children preceding him in death. Survivors are the following children: Clara C. FRILEY, Circleville; Albert, New Carlisle, Ind.; Ella ROLL, Washington C.H.; Mary LOTT, Athens; Alice FLECK, Columbus; Clarence, Yellowbud; Lawrence, Ashville; Edna BRUNGS, Circleville; and Mary TAVERN, Dayton; two brothers, Frank, Toledo; and Henry, Columbus; 41 grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren. Obituary / Additional Information: Mrs. Madelaine SIEGWALD entered into her rest Thursday Morning, August 23,at 11 o'clock at her residence on East Water Street. She was born in Kutzenhausen, Alsace, Loraine, Germany, on October 6, 1830, and was the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth ENGLE. She came to this country in 1853, in which year she united in marriage to Henry SIEGWALD at Lyons, New York. This union was blessed with fourteen children, seven surviving. Miss Callie, with whom she lived and Charles of this city; and Mrs. Fred HOHENSTINE, Mrs. O.P. ALLEN, Mrs. R.E. MYERS, Mr. Henry and Edward SIEGWALS, of Columbus. She also leaves ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband died on November 6, 1879. She had been a resident of Circleville for the past 58 years and for all that time she had been a consistent member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church. She was the last surviving charter member of the Ladies Aid Society. The Funeral was held Saturday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran church. Reverand G.J. Troutman officiated. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were: Clyde K. She was the daughter of Jacob and Catherine (Markle) Dunkle, and was born in Circleville Township, Pickaway County, January 30, 1825. Her husband, Jonas** Shellhammer, three daughters and one son have proceeded her. She leaves to mourn their loss, three daughters and one son, Mrs. B.F. Courtright, Circleville Township; Mrs. Willis NEFF, Jackson Township; Mrs. Isaac YOUNG, Washington Township and Jacob Shellhammer of Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday Afternoon at 1:30 at the home, Rev. BEAVERS of Stoutsville officiating. Internment in Forest Cemetery, arrangements in charge of Director Eugene M. In Memoriam Editor Union-Herald: - Priscilla Shellhammer, daughter of Jacob and Mary Markle Dunkle was born in Salt Creek Township, January 30, 1825, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B.F. Courtright, February 27, 1921, after an illness of about two weeks, aged 96 years and 28 days. She was baptized in infancy and united with the Reform Church of East Ringold at an early age and remained a member of that church all her life. She with her parents moved onto the farm now occupied by Amos Dunkle Jr. in Circleville Township in 1826. She was married to Rueben Shellhammer in Circleville June 27, 1852 by Rev. Joseph ROOF, of the Lutheran Church of Circleville. Her husband died December 6, 1903. To this union were born eight children, four of whom are living; namely; Elizabeth, wife of Isaac Young, of Jackson Township; Jacob, of Hampshire Texas; Lydia, wife of B. F. Courtright of Circleville Township and Amanda , wife of Willis Neff, of Jackson Township. Four children; Sarah, Mary, Catherine and Noah, preceded her to the spirit world. She also leaves to mourn her loss 24 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren and a wide circle of other relatives and friends. Tho her span of life exceeded the allotted three score and ten by more than a quarter of a century, yet she retained all her faculties to the last. Mother was always ready to help those in need. Obituary / Additional Information: FALL FROM 20 FOOT CLIFF CAUSE DEATH, Injuried she sustained Thursday at 10 p.m. when she fell 20 feet from a cliff at the country camp of Earl BARNHART, well known Chillicothe young man, at Buzzard's Roost, near Alum Cliffs, six miles west of Chillicothe, proved fatal to Miss Frances Louise Smith, aged 29, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Smith of Sunnyside. Death came to the well known young lady at 4:50 p.m. Sunday at Berger Hospital where she was brought Saturday morning from Chillicothe Hospital. Her condition was regarded as extremely serious from the time of the accident and she had at no time completely regained consciousness. Everything that was possible was done for her, and Dr. Lloyd JONNES called to Chillicothe immediately after the accident , was constantly at Miss Smith's side. Until Dr. BALDWIN was called from Columbus Saturday afternoon, it was thought she had a chance to recover, but after examination by this surgeon, her condition was announced extremely critical. The immediate cause of Miss Smith's death is not known. She suffered a concussion of the brain, a fractured lower jaw, lacerations of the right elbow, fractured ribs, and internal injuries. Miss Smith had been at a prenuptial party for Mr. and Mrs. Geves G. KENNY, (Martha Mary JACOB) at the cottage of Mr. Barnhart Thursday evening with 17 other friends. She left the party in the evening and was found by Mrs. Ann FISHER, of Columbus, another guest. Her condition was at that time regarded as serious and she was hurried to Chillicohte hospital in Mr. Barnhart's car. She was to have been a brides maid at the Kenny-Jacob wedding here Saturday night. Miss Smith was one of Circleville's best known and best liked young women. She was born at Sunnyside in the house in which she resided until the time of her death. She was born Sept 15 1901, the daughter of Joseph S. and Mollie CORCORAN Smith, who survive her with the following brothers and sisters: Mary, of New York, Elizabeth, Rose, Edward and Paul at home, and Mrs. Margaret Smith RAREY, of Columbus. Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 9 a.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic church, with Rev. Fr. J. S. HANNAN of the church and Father Alphonse FISHER, of Cincinnati, a friend of the family, officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery by the Albaugh Co.

He was born in 1823 in Huntington Township, Ross County, Ohio, the sone of Daniel STINSON and Cloa DYE STINSON. He was interred at the New Holland Cemetery, New Holland, Ohio. He was survived by sons Ezra STINSON (Lucinda B. LISTEN), Coke E. STINSON (Daisy WRIGHT), Elton T. STINSON (Pearl PORTER), and Harvey B. STINSON (Missouri TIMMONS); daughters Sara A. STINSON (W. N. GORDY), Elizabeth J. STINSON (Alfred DUNN), Cloa STINSON (Harvey BROOKS), Mary Belle STINSON (at home), Zetta STINSON (Charles F. HILL), Mary E. STINSON (Lewis C. STOCKMAN), and Ellen Elza STINSON (unknown). On 14 Oct 1845, he married Roxanna DICK, daughter of Jacob DICK and Sara McENTIRE. At the time of his death, Hugh STINSON had retired as operator of the grain elevator at Woodlyn Station, along the old Ohio and Erie Canal in Pickaway County.

Obituary / Additional Information: Born at Dublin Hill in Pickaway County, Ohio, Zetta STINSON m. Charles Fremont HILL at the Dublin Hill AME Church on 23 Aug 1883. After having lived in several Ohio locations, where Charles was a teacher and school superintendant, the couple moved to Circleville about 1920. Zetta died in Circleville on 23 May 1934, and was interred at Springlawn Cemetery, near Williamsport, Ohio. Surviving her were husband, Charles Fremont HILL, daughter, Kitturiah HILL WEIDINGER MOORE of Huntsville, Ohio, and Coral S. HILL of Belle Center, Logan County, Ohio. She was predeceased by her father, Hugh STINSON of Woodlyn Station, Ohio, and mother, Roxanna DICK STINSON.

Obituary / Additional Information: Edward TATMAN died Saturday morning at 7:30 o'clock of consumption at the home of a sister, Mrs Katherine HAINES,of North Pickaway Street. He had been ill for more than a year. Some years ago, while out hunting he was accidentally shot thru the leg and that member was amputated below the knee. Deceased was born in this county August 20, 1872 and was the son of Issiah and Mary (BROWN) TATMAN. He was twice married, and leaves two children, Earl TATMAN and Mollie TATMAN, and two sisters, Mrs Katherine HAINES and Mrs James SMALLWOOD, of this city. Mr. TATMAN was a war veteran.serving with Co.M 4th Regiment. The funeral services were held Monday morning at ten o'clock at the home of his sister, on North Pickaway St. Rev. G. F. HUGHES officiated. Interement was in Forest Cemetery.
