TILGHMAN (Tillman) WARREN was born in Caroline County, Maryland in 1777, the son of Solomon Warren (c1750-1820) and Mary Tilghman (c1751-1825). It is purported his first marriage was to a Mary Sangston and they had one son, Solomon Warren, who migrated to Indiana. Some researchers show his first marriage was to a Miss Blane. Tilghman's second marriage was to Rhoda Stevens on 02 Sep 1802 in Caroline Co., MD. Rhoda was born 04 Jul 1784 in Caroline Co., MD, the daughter of William and Mary Stevens. Rhoda's sister, Rachel, married John Warren, brother to Tilghman.
Excerpt from Pickaway Place and People, published by the Pickaway County Historical Society, page 50:
Tilghman WARREN left Caroline Co., MD in 1818 and headed west. He brought with him his wife, two daughters, three sons and a nephew. One of his horses died along the banks of Kinninkinnick Creek near its headwaters in Pickaway Township. Perhaps he decided that's where he should locate. He rode into Chillicothe to the Land Office and purchased 160 acres on the northeast corner of what is now Hayesville-Adelphi Road and the Pickaway-Saltcreek Township line road. The land cost him $2 per acre. Two more sons were born after they built a cabin and settled in Pickaway County. The farm was forested with oak trees. He died in 1853 and is buried in the Salem churchyard at Meade.
The article shows Tilghman's cabin was next to the Oak Grove School.
The nephew referred to in the article was Samuel Thomas Warren, son of William Warren who died in Caroline Co., MD in 1811 and brother to Tilghman. Samuel was born 1799 and married Rhoda Towers on 02 Sep 1828 in Pickaway County. Samuel and family removed to Jasper County, Indiana shortly after Tilghman's 1853 death.
Tillman (sic) Warren is listed under Pioneers of Saltcreek Township in 1818, in the publication History of Kingston and Rural Vicinity, by David E. Crouse; he is shown in 1827 Pickaway Inhabitants in Pickaway Twp., and is on the 1844 Wheeler Map of Pickaway County, Saltcreek Township - as T. Warren with two areas in Section 30.
It is of interest that Tilghman's parents, Solomon and Mary, also migrated to Ohio prior to Tilghman and lived in Jackson Township, Pike County, Ohio. Most of Tilghman's siblings also migrated to Ohio and lived in Pike County and Ross County.
Tilghman died 06 Mar 1853 and Rhoda died 29 Mar 1863. They are buried in the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Meade, Pickaway Co., OH. In the summer of 2003, the author visited the cemetery and located Rhoda's headstone which is broken and laying against other stones but Tilghman's stone could not be located.
