BALL, BOWYER, CRABB, DICK, HILL, MORTIMER, SHEPPERSON posted by George H. Stevens ,at Email: GHStevens3@AOL.COM , on Tuesday, June 8, 1999

Seeking CRABB Family Records in Pickaway Co. Ohio. Am seeking any records (Land, Deeds, Will, Children, Death, Burial, Marriage, etc.) of Edward Ralph CRABB & his wife Rachel BALL who migrated from Virginia to Ohio in the 18th Century. CRABB had farmland in what are today Fayette & Pickaway Counties. He and his elder son, Stephen CRABB, are buried on this farm. Subsequent descendants are up in Allen County, OH. Edward Ralph CRABB & Rachel BALL had eleven children. These were Stephen, John, Rachel, Jeremiah, Henry, Priscilla, William, James, Polly, Thomas and Ralph. My line of descent from Edward Ralph CRABB & Rachel BALL is as follows: Stephen CRABB, Sr. and Unknown First Wife had two children: Washington & Eliza. Stephen Crabb, Sr. & 2d Wife, Nancy MORTIMER had 5 children: Stephen, Jr., James, Elizabeth Rebecca, Lucinda & Charles. Washington CRABB & Sarah DICK had 10 children: Nathan Trotter, Samantha, George Pomeroy, Roxana, Jacob Dick, Charles Scott, Lide or Lida, Joel, Martha Ellen, and Thomas Amziah. Nathan Trotter Crabb (1848-1926?) & Cynthia Amelia BOWYER had 9 children: George Arthur Crabb, Sr., William, Etta, Guerney, Alice, Frank, Glenna, Mary Bell & Jessie. George Arthur CRABB,Sr. (1882-1939), was graduated from Ohio State Univ & Cornell Univ & taught Agriculture at the Univ of GA. He married Mary Clement SHEPPERSON and their 4 children included: George Arthur, Jr., Mary Frances, Anna Elizabeth, and Thomas Nathan. All of these Crabbs from Edward Ralph Crabb through George Arthur Crabb lived at least a portion of their lives in Ohio (Pickaway, Fayette, Allen, and perhaps other counties) Rachel BALL was the Widow of a Mr. BAILEY when she married Mr. CRABB, but I do not know whether this marriage took place in England, Virginia, or Ohio. CRABB worked for Lord FAIRFAX as an indentured servant in Virginia (possibly in Westmoreland County, VA) before moving on to Ohio. I do not know when he left Virginia and came to Ohio. Lord Fairfax (Thomas Fairfax, 6th Baron Cameron, 1693-1781) was born in Denton, England, and came to Virginia in 1735 to defend his property rights to Six Million Acres of Land in the "Northern Neck" of Virginia (the Land Between the Potomac and Rapahannock Rivers). His claim was upheld in 1745 and in 1747 he moved permanently to Virginia, the only British Peer to reside in North America. Lord Fairfax needed people to settle on his lands and he sponsored many English colonists in VA. Among these settlers who came from England to VA were three brothers surnamed CRABB, one of whom (Edward Ralph CRABB) was my GGGG Grandfather. To compensate Fairfax for having brought him to Virginia, CRABB worked for Lord Fairfax for several years as an indentured servant until his debt was paid, and he then went across the mountains into Virginia Lands (after the French and Indian Wars) that later became part of Ohio. I am looking for real records that document when and where he came in Pickaway and Fayette Counties, OH. I will appreciate any advice you can offer on how and where to seek these records of my CRABB ancestors in Ohio. V/R, MAJ George H. Stevens (USAR, Retired) 705 Gleneagles Drive Fort Washington, MD 20744 Home 301-292-1202 GHStevens3@AOL.COM
