MAY posted by Gary Sanderson ,at Email: gary@oldtavernfarm.com , on Tuesday, February 6, 2001

Hello, Am researching a piece of furniture I've owned for several years - a round, cherry, dropleaf, spool-legged tea table, ca. 1820-50, with the signature of cabinetmaker ``May'' written in chalk script on the underside. Accompanying the signature is a 19th century merchant's tag from Chelsea, Mich. Through surface research found two Mays listed among ``Ohio Furniture Makers 1790-1845'' by Jane Sikes Hageman, and believe one of them could have made the table. One is Henry May from Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, the other Michael May from Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio. The two could be related because Henry is listed as selling his Chillicothe tavern in 1822 and purchasing a farm in Pickaway County on the Ross County line. Can you tell me if the two were related, and could you tell me if you know of either man signing his furniture. If it's not your field of expertise, maybe you could provide the name of an antique dealer or historian who would know about the early cabinetmakers in your region. Thanks, Gary (413)772-0474)
